Meet Bob – A Story of Empathy and Coexistence Between Humans and Nature

Through the words of photographer Jasper Doest and the images that tell Bob’s journey, the exhibition Meet Bob explores an extraordinary encounter between humans and nature on the Caribbean island of Curaçao.

At the heart of the project is Bob, a Caribbean flamingo whose life took an unexpected turn when he accidentally crashed into a hotel window. Rescued by veterinarian Odette Doest, he recovered from his injuries but was left unable to survive in the wild.

His life took a new direction: Bob became an ambassador for conservation, accompanying Odette on school visits and helping raise children’s awareness of the importance of protecting wildlife.

With an intimate and sensitive approach, Jasper Doest documents Bob’s everyday life, from walks along the beach to encounters with schoolchildren and quiet moments at home. Often surprising, tender, and sometimes humorous, the photographs reveal the complexity of the relationship between humans and animals, inviting us to reflect on our responsibility towards the natural world.

A Dutch photographer, National Geographic Explorer, and storyteller whose work explores the relationship between humans and the environment, Doest uses photography as a tool for understanding, empathy, and change. In Meet Bob, he goes beyond an individual story to address a universal question: how can we learn to coexist with other species, recognizing their value and respecting their vulnerability?

Bob is more than a rescued animal: he is a symbol of the possibility of coexistence. His story reminds us that even a small act of kindness can inspire meaningful change, and that protecting nature begins with the ability to recognize another living being as a life worth protecting.
